Country House Portugal

This country house is conceived as a retreat from the week: simple in form, calm in atmosphere, and closely tied to its setting.

The design rests on a single gesture: a thin, horizontal roof plane that extends beyond the walls to shelter a generous terrace. Beneath it, slim steel-framed glazing wraps the corner of the living space, so the olive grove becomes an extension of the interior. Along the façade, a rhythm of vertical stone fins provides privacy and shade, giving the long elevation depth and a quiet play of light and shadow.

The material palette is deliberately restrained. Pale stone clads the roof edge, terrace and internal walls, creating continuity between inside and out. A white gravel path and a raised stone platform anchor the house in a landscape of dry grass, sand and ancient olive trees, left as close to natural as possible.

Inside, warm leather seating, natural fibres and soft, low-level lighting contrast with the cool mineral surfaces. At dusk the interior glows through the glass, and the house changes character from a pale pavilion in daylight to a warm, lit room under the stars.

Generous in space and light, the house offers what a weekend retreat should: simplicity, openness, and a slower pace of living.
